Hosts in Morocco rolled out the red carpet for Luxembourg’s Hereditary Grand Duke and Duchess on Tuesday as they participated in an Economic Mission.
The royal couple, along with Economy Minister Etienne Schneider and the official delegation visited the headquarters of the Wilaya or administrative headquarters of Greater Casablanca. (more…)
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has opened its first Resident Office in Morocco on Tuesday which will play a key role in boosting the Bank’s activities and strengthening the EBRD’s relationship with the authorities and the business community.
The office was opened in Casablanca by EBRD’s First Vice President Phil Bennett together with Morocco’s Minister of Economy and Finance, Mohammed Boussaid, and present were EBRD Managing Director for the southern and eastern Mediterranean region, Hildegard Gacek, and EBRD Director for Morocco, Laurent Chabrier. The latest rounds that Algerian diplomacy has ineffectively shot against Morocco since early 2015 placed Algerian Foreign Minister, Ramtane Lamamra on an ejection seat.
A source close to the corridors of the Algerian power reported that President Abdelaziz Bouteflika recently held a closed meeting on this subject matter with the chief of the Military Intelligence Services, General Mohamed Lamine Mediène, aka “Toufik.” (more…)
The advanced status of Morocco in terms of its improving human rights record is turning Morocco into a strategic partner to the European Union, Driss El Yazami, President of the Moroccan National Council of Human Rights, has said.
Speaking at a public lecture at the Sofia University that he held at the invitation of Bulgarian Vice President Margarita Popova, Yazami outlined the tremendous changes that global notions of human rights have undergone over the past few decades. (more…)
Morocco arrested four people Tuesday in the Western Sahara after they allegedly issued a fatwa authorising the burning alive of a person they accused of rejecting Islam, the interior ministry said.
It said the four members of a “terrorist cell” detained in the disputed territory’s main city of Laayoune had planned to “carry out dangerous terrorist crimes” in Morocco. (more…)

A small U.N. peacekeeping force in Western Sahara has been extended for another year but without the human rights monitoring mandate that residents have long demanded. The territory held by Morocco is called Africa’s last remnant of a colonial past.
