The Morocco puts pressure on the European Union. Thursday, February 25, the government announced the breaking of contact with the Brussels institutions. This is the result of heightened tension between Rabat and Europe dating from December, after the European Justice annulled a free trade agreement with Morocco.

This agreement included the Western Sahara, the former Spanish colony controlled by Morocco but claimed by the separatist Polisario Front, supported by Algeria.

The Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane who announced at the beginning of the Government Council on Thursday 25 February in Rabat: Morocco the ” suspend contact ” with the European Union.

A spectacular decision, but expected since December, when the European Justice annulled an agreement between Europe and Morocco on the liberalization of trade in agricultural and fishing material. This is the reason for the cancellation was that, at the time, greatly irritated the Moroccan authorities. Because this agreement extended to products from the Western Sahara.

Moroccan Prime Minister has also informed the EU representative in Rabat that his government categorically rejected, ” the highly political nature and contrary to international law,” the decision of the European court, so he interrupted contact with Europeans, meanwhile explanations.

This break however came as EU member countries had used the controversial judgment, not to quarrel with a valuable ally in the fight against terrorism.

But according to the website of the ruling party, Morocco considered that, in the discussions, the European legal services had not been very ”cooperative“.
