Training course on key economic issues to be held in Rabat, Morocco

2012-08-23_UniversityMohammedV-Souissi.jpgThe 21st UNCTAD regional training course on Key Issues on the International Economic Agenda is to be held at the University Mohammed V-Souissi, Rabat from 27 August to 14 September 2012 with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Kingdom of Morocco.

This regional course for Africa will look at the links between trade, investment, finance and development to enhance the understanding of the relationships among these areas, and their link to developing countries’ development strategies. It aims also to provide selected participants with the knowledge and skills for the design and implementation of trade and development policies, as well as for trade negotiations corresponding to the needs and interests of their countries.

Twenty-one participants nominated by their governments have been accepted to attend this course — from Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Comoros, Cote d’Ivoire, Lesotho, Mauritania, Morocco, Namibia, Sao Tome’ & Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda and Zambia.

The course will be opened on Monday, 27 August 2012 at the University Mohammed V-Souissi by the President of the University, Professor Radouane Mrabet.

The Dean of the Faculty of Science, Law and Economics, Professor Khalid Berjaoui will also address participants, Ambassadors of participating countries and other personalities. Senior officials from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation; Economy and Finance; Industry, Trade and New Technologies; and, National Education, Higher Education, Staff Training and Scientific Research have been invited to this event.

UNCTAD will be represented by Ms. Genevieve Féraud, Head of the Knowledge Sharing and Training Capacity Development Branch of the Division on Technology and Logistics. The UN Resident Representative, Mr. Bruno Pouezat, will also provide a keynote address at the opening session.

This regional course is one of UNCTAD’s flagship training programmes that addresses the analytical and policy challenges that policy makers, Geneva-based delegates and other stakeholders face in promoting inclusive and sustainable growth and development. Successfully managing these challenges helps their countries to integrate into the rapidly globalizing international economy in ways that are beneficial for all.

The course is based on UNCTAD’s development perspective and focuses on the linkages between trade, finance, investment, technology, logistics and macroeconomic policies in the context of major economic trends and debates in multilateral fora. It emphasizes the various approaches that countries have taken to derive maximum development gains. The curriculum is complemented by the expertise of the various UN Regional Commissions.
