Relations between Algeria and Morocco have been strained in recent days after a Moroccan national came under fire on the border between the two North African neighbors.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has offered to mediate a dispute between Algeria and Morocco, an Algerian diplomat said Monday.

Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan “proposed, during a phone call with Algerian officials on Thursday, to mediate a resolution to the Algerian-Moroccan row… which was triggered last week when a Moroccan national came under cross-border fire,” the diplomat, requesting anonymity, told Anadolu Agency.

“The initiative aims to ease tension between the two countries,” the diplomat said.
