DOHA: Qatar has identified nine new countries from where domestic workers such as maids, cooks and drivers are to be recruited to help cut the rising recruitment costs.

The countries are Bosnia, Armenia and Macedonia in Europe, Cambodia and Vietnam in South East Asia and Tanzania, Kenya, Morocco and Sudan in Africa, a local Arabic daily reported yesterday.

The daily quoted unnamed sources as saying that manpower agencies will be provided all kinds of help to recruit domestic helpers from the above countries. A joint committee formed recently with members from the ministries of interior and labour has assured that it would ease the procedures of recruitment for manpower agencies as well as potential employers.

The panel will closely coordinate with Qatar’s labour and foreign ministries as well as Qatari embassies overseas and the diplomatic missions of the nine countries in Doha to make sure that manpower agencies begin recruiting workers from these countries soon.
