Moroccan energy company NAREVA Holding has deployed what is thought to be the first wind lidar – a ZephIR DM – in Morocco demonstrating their leadership in technology solutions to maximise potential project value.

The announcement follows the company’s acquisition of the lidar in connection with the 200 MW Akhenfir Wind Farm confirmed at the EWEA 2016 Analysis of Operating Wind Farms Workshop where ZephIR Lidar presented methods of optimising wind farm development and operation.

Nyzar Jorio, Head of Performance and Asset Management at NAREVA commented: “During the first phase of wind farm project development our new ZephIR DM wind lidar provides NAREVA with the opportunity to use system ground based mode for wind resource assessment and power performance measurements. We can then mount the same ZephIR DM on the nacelle of our turbines during the operational phase to perform yaw misalignment studies, power curve measurements and other important turbine health checking and benchmarking routines. NAREVA selected ZephIR DM because of the Dual Mode functionality of the unit, the ability to scan across the full rotor diameter in turbine mounted mode and the excellent customer service reputation, which we have received already to date! As we move into the next phase of Morocco’s wind energy revolution we look forward to working closely with ZephIR Lidar.”

NAREVA has confirmed it will be using the ZephIR DM to support site development activities by performing bankable energy yield assessments before performing power curve measurements equivalent to IEC 61400-12-1 CDV once the site is operational.

Matthew Smith, Head of Business Development at ZephIR Lidar, was pleased to confirm the new relationship: “It’s great to see NAREVA taking a leading role in Morocco and embracing ZephIR Lidar technology. We believe that the commercial acceptance of our wind lidars combined with our outstanding level of customer support gave Nareva the confidence they needed to invest in this technology. We will work closely with Nareva to realise the benefits from their investment and are honoured to be working with them at this exciting time for the Moroccan wind industry.”

About NAREVA Holding An independent electricity company, NAREVA Holding provides its customers with socially responsible, competitive and sustainable services and solutions while ensuring that it creates value for its human capital, its shareholders, and its stakeholders. NAREVA Holding has a portfolio of energy assets of over 3000 MW (including 1650 MW of wind power). The Moroccan company already operates five wind farms in Morocco, including the Tarfaya wind farm (300 MW), one of the largest in Africa, and is building the Safi thermal power plant (2×693 MW).

About ZephIR Lidar – ZephIR Lidar provides hub height and turbine mounted accurate wind measurement, for wind energy and meteorological applications. These industry leading wind lidar products, ZephIR 300 and ZephIR DM, provide accurate wind measurements, in both onshore and offshore applications. With more than 10 million hours of operation in the field and over 1000 deployments (and counting) ZephIR Lidar has pioneered the use of lidar in the wind industry. The company is proud of the many world firsts it has achieved with customers including upwind measurements from a turbine nacelle, turbine wake studies, offshore deployments both fixed and floating wind lidar, an industry-accepted validation process, re-financing and re-powering a wind farm, successfully technology accuracy demonstration in a wind tunnel and total wind project financing from a lidar without need for a met mast.
