Rabat — The Moroccan people celebrate, on Sunday, HM King Mohammed VI’s 48th anniversary, a national event revealing the unwavering royal solicitude for the youth.

Since his enthronement in 1999, the sovereign has multiplied initiatives in favor of young generations in order to involve them in building institutions and the rule of law.

Among the gestures which are included in the new constitution was the monarch’s decision to set up a council for youth.

“To give young people an institutional forum for expression and debate, I was keen to set up a Council for Youth and Community Work as an institution with a proactive role designed to enable young people to contribute to building a nation based on unity, dignity and social justice, in keeping with the principles of democracy and responsible citizenship,” HM the King announced in his speech to the Nation dated June 17.

To give concrete substance to this royal approach, the new constitution (article 33) calls upon the public authorities to take all appropriate measures to generalize youth participation in the country’s social, economic, cultural and political development.

Other initiatives by HM the King include lowering voting age from 20 to 18 and the policies of promoting young people’s capacities, creating small and medium enterprises and launching income-generating projects.
