Peaceful resolution of Mali conflict – Morocco on Tuesday urged the international community to help preserve the unity, stability and territorial integrity of Mali, whose northern half has been seized by rebels and Islamists. The Foreign minister of Morocco, Saad Dine El Otmani, who was speaking to journalists, after meeting the United Nations Secretary General’s special envoy for the Sahel, Romano Prodi, expressed support for regional and international efforts to resolve the conflict.

He said Morocco supported efforts by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the United Nations to reach a peaceful solution based on dialogue between parties to the conflict.

The minister expressed Morocco’s intention to continue supplying humanitarian aid and political and logistical support to resolve the conflict.

Mr Prodi reaffirmed his position against any military intervention in Mali.

‘My mission is to avoid war,’ he noted, saying that war would have terrible consequences on Mali and the whole region.
