Alex Gilliead, Newcastle’s 16-year-old rising star, played for England under-16s as they won their second game of the Montaigu Tournament with a 1-0 win over Morocco.

The Consett-based striker played for 75 of the 80 minute match at the St. Laurent-sur-Sevre Stadium in France, before making way for Everton’s Arlen Birch.

Liverpool’s Jerome Sinclair got the only goal of the game after eight minutes in Thursday night’s success, which followed a 1-1 draw with Japan on Tuesday.

It was Gilliead’s second cap for his country after appearing in the 4-0 Victory Shield win against Wales last October. He made his debuts for Newcastle’s under-18 and Reserve sides last month, as well as scoring his first goal at under-18 level in the 3-1 win over Stoke.
