EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Enlargement Catherine Ashton and European Neighbourhood Policy Commissioner Štefan Füle welcomed the parliamentary elections which took place on 25 November in Morocco as “an important step in the on-going process of democratic reform”.

The elections were initiated by the King Mohammed IV as a response to the demands and aspirations of the Moroccan people for a more democratic society. Ashton and Füle welcomed the calm and peaceful atmosphere in which the elections had passed and an increased voter turn-out, as well as improvements of the electoral framework stemming from the recent constitutional reforms.

The new parliament and future government will face the important challenge of taking forward comprehensive political, economic and social reforms in the country.

“In line with the objectives of the Advanced Status with the EU and the European Neighbourhood Policy, the European Union will continue to fully support Morocco’s efforts to implement an ambitious reform agenda,” Ashton and Füle said.
