One of the reasons why Essaouira is such an excellent destination to visit after trekking holidays is the relaxing atmosphere that pervades the entire town.
Its seaside location certainly helps too, and you’re sure to want to spend at least one afternoon soaking up the sunshine on its golden sands.
If unwinding is your primary aim, you’ll be in the right place, especially if you’re keen to relieve your muscles with a massage. The region specialises in the production of argan oil, which is made from the nuts of the argan tree native to the area.
The oil is said to have anti-ageing properties, as well as being good for strengthening muscle tissue. For a full body treatment, head to one of the town’s hammams where you will be utterly pampered.
Another option if you’re keen to sample the wellness offerings here is to indulge in thalassotherapy, which makes use of a range of products derived from the sea.
You could even pick up a bottle of locally produced argan oil to take home with you if you’re keen to experience its properties after your holiday has finished.
This is far from the only thing you could buy as a memento of your stay in Essaouira, as the town is renowned for its range of exquisite crafts.
Some amazing marquetry and cabinets can be found in the local shops, with woodworkers producing beautiful jewellery boxes, chessboards and pieces of furniture, often inlaid with other materials, like mother of pearl or copper.
Wool covers are another product made here, as well as raffia or nubuck slippers, so you should be able to find a souvenir that suits your tastes.
During your shopping trip, you are likely to notice the architecture of the town and may be keen to learn more about Essaouira’s history. Over the years, the port has been controlled by various civilisations, including Arabs, Europeans, Africans and Amazighs. As a result, the buildings are of differing styles that reflect the location’s diverse past.
One of the best places to visit, however, is the Medina, which dates from the 18th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Described as “an outstanding example of a fortified town” by the organisation, it is bound to be something you want to see for yourself during your stay.
For panoramic views across the entire settlement, head to the top of the town’s ramparts and look out over the streets in one direction and the beach in the other.
You should also take the time to explore the harbour, as you’ll find numerous colourful boats bobbing in the water. Perhaps the best time to visit here is in the early morning or evening, as you will be able to watch as a procession of fishing vessels either passes out of or into the sheltered port.

Essaouira is particularly well known for its water sports, including surfing and windsurfing, with the swell coming from the Atlantic Ocean providing excellent waves.
