United Nations, Apr 1 (Prensa Latina) China has today assumed the monthly presidency of the UN Security Council. They face challenges such the conflicts in Syria and Yemen, the crisis in Morocco and accusations of sexual abuse in the Central African Republic.
The UN Security Council will hold a closed door meeting in April to define its work program. The Chinese ambassador to the UN, Liu Jieyi will then present it to the General Assembly and the media.
The agenda is expected to include, as usual, debates on the priorities of the organization, the analysis of serious crises and the monitoring of the UN’s 16 peacekeeping operations.
The presidency of China, one of the five countries with a permanent seat and veto power in the Council, begins with expectations for the resumption of peace negotiations in Syria and the Yemen. In addition, the crisis that has erupted between the Secretary General of the UN, Ban Ki-moon and Morocco and the accusations of sexual abuses against French troops and UN peace keeping forces in the Central African Republic, will be important issues for China’s presidency.
Regarding Morocco, Ban has insisted on finding a solution with the support of the Security Council to his dispute with Morocco, whose government has objected to the label of occupation given by the Secretary General to the domination that Rabat imposes on Western Sahara.
The 15-member UN body is made up of China, Russia, the United States, United Kingdom and France, the five powers with permanent seats, and Angola, Egypt, Spain, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Senegal, Ukraine, Uruguay and Venezuela holding the 10 rotating seats.
