The Spanish government is investigating how more than 40 migrants escaped from two internment centers in the south of the country where they were being held.
The Interior Ministry says some 35 escaped Sunday from a center in Algeciras — near Spain’s southernmost tip — while around eight broke out the previous night from southeastern Murcia by cutting through a perimeter fence.
The ministry says 10 were re-arrested Sunday and police are searching for the rest.
The Algeciras center is located in an old, former prison building that can hold up to 190 people.
