Morocco Breaks Up Terrorist Cell

RABAT, June 26 (BERNAMA-NNN-MAP) — The Moroccan authorities have broken up a terrorist cell in the northeast city of Fez which was brainwashing and recruiting Moroccan volunteers to fight in Syria and Iraqw, the Interior Ministry says.

The Moroccan security forces said members of the ring, with the help of heads of terrorist organisations in Morocco and Syria, had been hiring and sending several Moroccan volunteers to the two Arab countries to undergo military training and learn how to handle weapons and make explosives, pending their enrollment to carry out suicide attacks in Iraq and Syria. Tangiers rises as Morocco drilling begins
AIM-listed Tangiers Petroleum (TPET) has started drilling at the TAO-1 exploration well, offshore Morocco, which has previously been described as a “potential company maker”.
Shares in Tangiers moved up 3.12% to 14p on news that the Ralph Coffman jack-up rig had commenced operation. (more…)

Re “Morocco’s King Slow to Deliver on Pro-Democracy Vows” (news article, June 12):

Morocco has made remarkable advances on human rights and democratization, changes that began long before the Arab Spring.

As Navi Pillay, the departing United Nations high commissioner for human rights, said at the end of an official visit to Morocco last month, “In my exchanges with the authorities, including His Majesty King Mohammed VI and various ministers, it was clear that there is the political will at the highest levels to continue efforts to set a firm human rights foundation for Moroccan society.” (more…)

Moroccan King Mohammed VIThe Moroccan parliament approved unanimously yesterday a bill that changes the Constitutional Council into a Constitutional Court, Anadolu news agency said.

The Moroccan Constitutional Council was established in 1996. The ratification of the new bill is to be enacting after its publication in the official newspaper.

According to the bill, the Constitutional Court enjoys large powers that represent the distinctive role of Constitutional Judiciary along with the temporary democratic system.

According to article 130 in the Moroccan Constitution, the Constitutional Court consists of 12 members with a nine year-term in office. The king chooses six and the two chambers of the parliament choose the other six.
