Moroccan police announced on Tuesday that they have arrested seven Islamic State (IS) linked suspects who were planning to join IS branch in Libya, the Moroccan Interior Ministry said in a statement.

According to the statement, the suspects who were active in the southern cities of Marrakesh, Laayoune and Boujdour, were planning to join IS ranks in Syria and Iraq before deciding to go to Libya through Moroccan-Mauritanian borders.

The arrested people planned to acquire arms and carry out terrorist attacks in the IS style, the statement added.

While Morocco announced the dismantlement of over a hundred terror cells, it is the first time that the interior ministry says that these suspects were planning to join the growing IS branch in Libya.

According to the Moroccan government, police have busted over 140 terrorist cells since 2002 and successfully foiled hundreds of terrorist plans. More than 2,200 individuals have been arrested.
