EU Seeks To Develop Close Ties With Morocco

Morocco is an important partner for the EU, which plays a key role in the Euro-Mediterranean area and the Africa-EU Partnership. The EU wants to continue to develop a strong bilateral relationship with Morocco, based on shared values, mutual respect and solidarity, said EU High Representative Federica Mogherini here Tuesday.

Speaking at a press conference after the twelfth session of EU-Morocco Ministerial Council, she said the meeting examined the ongoing reform process in Morocco.

“In this context the European Union has congratulated the Moroccan government for the progress already done and encouraged it to reinforce the implementation of political, economic and social reforms prescribed by the Constitution according to the aspirations of the Moroccan people,” said Mogherini.

She added that the EU attaches “great importance to the regional integration of the Maghreb, for which Morocco plays a decisive role.” On his part, Salaheddine Mezouar, Foreign Minister of Morocco, told the joint press conference that “a strategic partnership (with the EU) means commitment, investment going forward, always be a positive actor.

“Morocco has shown it, that is why we have made today an example of exemplary cooperation between north and south and we are excited to see this partnership forward with determination and responsibility of both sides,” he said.

A joint statement after the EU-Morocco Ministerial Council said the meeting provided an opportunity to exchange in a high political level on many regional issues of common interest, such as regional integration, the dialogue Euro-Arab and Euro-Africa, Libya, Syria, the Sahel and the peace process in the Middle East.
